Can You Cure Gum Disease?

Posted on 10/25/2021 by Dr. Pedro Trejo
Can You Cure Gum Disease?Gum disease is a serious form of gum infection which can damage the bone and soft tissue that supports your teeth. It is a common but largely preventable disease, and it is usually the result of poor oral hygiene. the proper action or treatment against this disease varies from one person to another since there are different stages of it.

Understanding Gum Disease

Gum disease is generally categorized into four different subtypes. The first stage is gingivitis. A more advanced stage is slight periodontal disease. As it progresses, it can become moderate periodontal disease, as well as advanced periodontal disease. It is important to note that gingivitis is the only stage of the disease that is curable, since it is the stage where the disease has not yet cause damage to your bones.

The second stage of the disease is not curable, but it is manageable. Early signs of slight periodontal disease can include an increased swelling of your gums, and you may notice bleeding during brushing or when you floss. If we do not get an opportunity to treat this disease early on at this particular stage, you can start to suffer from severe bone and tooth loss, shifting of teeth, and gum sensitivity.

Moreover, the disease will also start to affect your immune system and bloodstream once it reaches the moderate or advanced stage. Although most stages of gum disease are not reversible, there are available treatments for each stage.

Treating Gum Disease

It is important for you to seek out any available treatments in order for your teeth and gums to stay healthy. If you suspect that you have gum disease, the best course of action would be to seek help from your dentist as soon as possible. Non-surgical treatments such as scaling, and root planning can help remove and discourage any further buildup of bacteria around your gums. We can also suggest antibiotics that will help you control the infection.

Although non-surgical treatments are widely available, surgical treatments are generally more effective especially for advanced cases of gum disease. If you have any concerns with regards to the health of your gums and teeth, consider a visit to our office for a professional checkup and diagnosis.
