For patients who have lost a tooth and are having a difficult time adjusting to it, a single-tooth implant can be the right fit. A single tooth implant can retain a natural tooth look and feel without damaging surrounding teeth or losing the underlying bone mass. The single-tooth implants available in Houston, TX come in different shapes, sizes, and colors to match the nearby natural teeth so the implant will not be noticed. If you feel like you are in need of a single tooth implant, please contact us at Periodontal and Implant Surgeons of Houston. We will be glad to discuss it with you.

Who Needs Single Tooth Implants?

Single-tooth implants will replace your missing teeth and improve the function and aesthetics of your smile.

Anyone missing a tooth can benefit from this type of dental implant. It is always beneficial to the bone structure where the tooth was lost to have an artificial tooth in place to provide the necessary pressure to maintain bone growth. In this case, the implant is embedded into the mandible so to the patient, for all intents and purposes, it feels like an actual tooth. It becomes a permanent addition to the patient’s mouth, and they can floss and brush just like a natural tooth.

Placing A Single Tooth Implant

Many patients fail to realize the single tooth implant can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months to complete. This is because it takes time for the implant to bond with the bone to ensure that the crown will last. Despite the amount of time it takes to complete the procedure, the end result is a permanent artificial tooth that looks and feels identical to your surrounding teeth.

There are three main stages of the single tooth implant. The first is called the implant placement, the second is the placement of the abutment and the third is placing the crown.

During the first stage, the bone is exposed by making an incision in the gums. From there, small holes are drilled into the bone so the implant can be screwed into place.

In the second stage, the abutment is placed on the implant. In some cases, a small cap is used to cover the area so proper healing can commence. Once it has healed appropriately, the abutment is permanently screwed into place.

The final stage is crown placement. Once the crown is created, it is colored appropriately so it matches the surrounding teeth and then secured into place. Once properly seated, the artificial tooth acts like any normal tooth. It can and should be brushed and flossed regularly. During regular checkups, this tooth will be cleaned and polished just like an ordinary tooth to ensure it will last as long as possible.
