Dental implants, also known as oral appliances, are used to replace missing teeth. Of all the oral appliances, dental implants are one of the most effective in replacing lost teeth. This means that you no longer have to settle for traditional dentures to restore your smile. As much as dental implants are excellent in their role, taking good care of them is paramount. One way of doing this is keeping your gums healthy. When you fail to clean your gums, you could cause damage to your dental implants. This is why we encourage good oral hygiene, especially for dental implant patients. Here are ways you can keep your gums healthy with dental implants.

Brushing

Just as you would brush your teeth at least twice a day, you should do the same with your dental implants. For the best results, you can use a toothbrush specially designed for dental implants. It can either be manual, electric, or sonic. Brushing your implants thoroughly will help keep your gums healthy. This is because it gets rid of bacteria that could have spread to your gums and caused gum infections.

Flossing

We encourage our dental implant patients to floss them regularly. You can use unwaxed tape for that purpose or get one specially designed for dental implants. Alternatively, you can go for a floss threader that will help you maneuver hidden spaces. As much as most people remember to brush their teeth, they ignore flossing. This is very unfortunate because flossing is as important as brushing. It gets rid of stuck food particles that can cause gum infections like gum disease. Therefore, you should always floss your implants at least once daily. You should also come in for regular dental checks and cleaning.
